Where is avastin injection
Abnormal blood vessels need a body chemical called VEGF to grow. Avastin blocks VEGF, slowing the growth of blood vessels in the eye.
During an outpatient procedure, your ophthalmologist first numbs the eye to block pain. Then your doctor injects the Avastin directly into your eye. Before the procedure, your ophthalmologist will clean your eye to prevent infection and numb your eye with medicine. A very thin needle is passed through the white part of your eye and the drug is injected. Usually you do not see the needle itself. You may need to continue having these injections over many months.
Sometimes ophthalmologists will combine Avastin treatment with other treatments for the best chance of saving your vision. Every treatment can have side effects. It is important to understand the benefits and risks of any treatment you might have.
Call your ophthalmologist right away if you have any of these problems within a few days of Avastin treatment. There is controversy over whether Avastin is associated with heart attacks or strokes. At your appointment, your Retinal Specialist will perform the procedure typically using the following steps:. Perform tests to check the condition of the eye such as asking you to read an eye chart Administer eye drops to numb your eye before the injection Clean your eye with anti septic to prevent infection Apply a specialised tool to gently hold it open Injects the Avastin directly into your eye using a very thin needle that passes through the white part of your eye You do not see the needle itself and the procedure does not hurt.
The anaesthetic and antiseptic are then washed out of the eye. An eye patch may or may not be applied after. After the treatment: Have someone drive you home Wear sunglasses if your eyes feel sensitive to light Try to rest your eyes as much as possible for at least a few hours Ask your Retinal Specialist if you should avoid any particular activities. If your eye feels sore, uncomfortable or gritty, please use the artificial tears given by your Retinal Specialist.
You can also take over the counter pain relievers. If the eye gets more sore, more red, vision deteriorates the next few days, please contact your Retinal Specialist or the Staff. This depends on the patient and the condition.
Most patients need at least 3 injections one month apart. After that, the frequency of injections may slowly reduce as the condition comes under control. Avastin is a safe drug and appears to have no adverse effects within the eye. It can be safely given for many years. Complications include:. Eye discomfort for few hours after Subconjunctival haemorrhage blood shot eye Increased pressure in the eye. These usually resolve within a few days. Use the eye drops provided if they occur, and over the counter pain relievers.
Serious complications are rare. These include Retinal tears Infections Retinal artery occlusion. The injection will put the eye pressure up for a few hours.
It is therefore riskier is you have glaucoma, but this is generally not a major problem. Extra eye drops or tablets are given if the pressure stays up. The day after the injection your eye should be comfortable. If your eye starts to get red, with misty vision there may be no pain , perhaps days after the injection, you should suspect an infection and attend your eye department urgently.
There is a very small chance that the drug will cause side effects outside the eye, such as aggravating heart disease, but no extra risk was found in a large safety survey. Eye The drug will reduce the retinopathy, both the leakage and new vessel growth. Please tell your doctor is you are pregnant, and try and avoid getting pregnant for the 6 weeks following the injection.
In any respect, pregnancy makes active diabetic reitnopathy MUCH worse. Please seek attention within 24 hours These may happen in the months after the injection. HbA1c and insulin advice applies to diabetes only; also, for the non-diabetic, mmhg is the maximum recommended blood pressure.
