Why does kevin short wear pink

Tyler, Tx. Matt Mayfield. This whole topic and the opinions posted shows the reason the sport lags behind the rest of the sports world and why bass fishing isn't a major player. What fisherman doesn't understand that in order to propel the sport to place we'd all like it go, is we have to get above this idea that it's about the anglers. If we want millions of viewers pouring in millions of dollars to our sport, we need to make it about the audience.

The people that get that get ridiculed for thinking and trying to move the events in that direction. Who really cares what the co-anglers do besides the co-anglers? Can anyone tell me what the co-angler in the last events name was, what he won and how? Without looking. No one cares about the minor leagues or the amatuers. They pay to watch Tiger Woods win 7 million an event and to get those flashy numbers in our sport, we have to give them something to watch. If that means removing co anglers from the event so the pro's have more room to work and do what they do, so be it.

There are plenty of avenues for co-anglers in fishing and opportunities to learn or make money. Not everyone aspires to be a pro and that's not what anyone is saying. All guys like Kevin is saying, is they need to perform and be allowed to perform at their best in order to showcase themselves and the products they represent so that companies will poor money into the sport to keep it going, manufactures will keep building new and better products to buy and give us a reason to have someone to root for.

Otherwise we're always going to be pot bellied rednecks fishing derbies for pocket change. Joined: Aug Amarillo TX. When I read Short's blog, it sort of whizzed me off. I agreed a lot with what he said, but not all of it.

Carl you made an excellent point that I did not know about, some pros getting the top 20 local guys every week. That's not Right! I gotta say it makes a good argument to do away with the co anglers. Sinkey, the guy came in and made an apology for the pink comment, give him a break, and maybe read the entire thread next time. And the comment about go and buy a boat if you don't want to be a co is out of line. How many of us do you think would be co anglers by choice?

The main thing that disappoints me, and other fisherman on my level about them doing away with the co anglers is, it's one of those things I always wanted to do, and now won't be able to.

I'll sure as heck get over it, but it's a bummer, that's all. It would have to be watching the sales of WEC E1 crankbaits go from next-to-nothing to off the chart after I won that Elite Series event in When you see what a big tournament win can do for your sponsors and the products you use, it's impressive.

A lot of tournament organizations are working hard to make the sport more accessible and appealing to the youth through college and even high school programs. That bodes well for the future both from a tournament perspective and the fact that more young people are being exposed to fishing.

We still need a new vision, though, to open it up to the world. From a tournament perspective, the sport is still all about the weigh-in, but the real climax of a tournament day happens out on the water. We need to convey that. On the business side of things, we tend to glorify ultra high-end products, but that's not where most of the market is.

The financial side of things has always been a struggle. I'm still working on that. Dealing with the mental aspects of the financial struggle can weigh on you, too. When you go out there knowing you have to catch them to get a check, it can affect you negatively. You need to be able to focus on fishing rather than on finances. A lot of people think I wear pink and that my boat and equipment are pink in memory of my daughter, Michelle [killed in an automobile accident in at the age of 19], but that's not true.

Pink was a marketing decision I made. It's about standing out and being brave enough to wear that color when no one else will do it. It started back when I worked for Farm Bureau and would occasionally wear a pink shirt that got a lot of attention and comments.

Early in my career I had a big contract with a major company, and I trusted them to be as good as their word. They weren't, and I never got paid a dime. I chased after that money for a while, but learned a valuable lesson about the business side of this business. I'll never make that mistake again.

Rick Clunn once said the easiest tournaments to win are the tough tournaments — at the first take-off, half the field is already done because they've taken themselves out mentally. That stuck with me. Tournament fishing is a cruel mistress. Coffee's a drink that seems to encourage a lot of accessories around it. Coffee cake, coffee table, coffee table book, clutches of people. Say what you want about alcohol, but not only are there not a lot of optional accessories, alcohol actually helps you get rid of things.

Family, home, job, driver's license. In fact, at a certain point, the only thing you have to remember to get, is more alcohol. And maybe a rag for your squeegee. You go, you play, you drink a beer or three at the 19th hole.

While not necessarily as potentially harmful as alcohol, it is nevertheless a commitment to losing things. If you have to get up at 3 a. Users browsing this forum: bleetmj , fastfiat , marvinvaughn , Zippo Guy and 41 guests. Toggle search. Toggle navigation. Bass Fishing Forum - Westernbass.
