Why serving in church

This website gives more detailed explanations for each one of these listed gifts and some verses that talk about them. There are many different tests you can take that can help you determine what spiritual gifts you may have, but ultimately, take some time to pray about this subject with the Lord. Talk with your church on where they could use your gift, whether it is on Sunday mornings, small groups during the week, or with other ministries that the church partners with.

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, ….

The Bible says that when we receive a spiritual gift, we are to use it to serve those around us. Spiritual gifts are not for our own gain, but for the gain of others. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. The whole passage is a metaphor of how each one of us has a different purpose but how we are all to be part of the church body.

My colleague summed up clearly why serving the church is necessary in this article. In order to keep the building, ministry, facilities, lights, plumbing, etc. This type of service exists to keep the church running. Without it, the building will go into foreclosure, or the church will have to cut back on child care, events held, etc.

I do believe, that these types of service should not be the only kind of service. Serving the Body of Christ in these ways is good but we cannot neglect the command to care for widows, orphans, and the other types of needs that are within the church.

If we focus too much on the upkeep of the building and being able to maintain a Sunday service, we are doing something wrong. Faith is absolutely right in saying that both parts of serving in the church, behind the scenes work at the church building and working with people, are necessary. But the joy is that when the church body comes together, all areas of need in the church are able to be fulfilled!

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Jesus wants us to make disciples of all nations. By serving, you are helping the church with this purpose.

Not only are they discipling the people who regularly attend, but people even come to Christ by attending the church. The Great Commission is a command to serve others around us. Serving in the local church is necessary, whether the local church is where you were born, where you moved, or in a foreign country.

When serving in the local church, however, we need to be careful that we have the right reasons while serving. The two wrong ways to serve include having the wrong reasons to serve, and burning yourself out. You also need to check the integrity of the church. I decided that I should start serving. My logic went something like this: I know the youth pastor and a couple volunteers in the youth ministry.

I only recently graduated high school so I could probably relate to the kids. By consistently showing up and serving in the youth, I earned a high level of trust and influence in the lives of the young people there. We got to walk together through difficult and fun times in their young adult life.

They went from timid little baby seventh graders who barely knew anything about worship or the Bible, to young women in love with Jesus, who will worship their hearts out every opportunity they get.

I have been able to help them look at their lives and look at the Word and learn how to apply it. It takes time and love to cultivate this kind of influence. He served those closest to Him, He served His own community. We would be wise to do likewise. Strength is for service, not status. We would be more effective as the Body of Christ and as a church community when we each use our gifts to serve faithfully. You know those things that you are good at?

God gave us those gifts so that we can bless other people too! Selfish much? I am here to serve the youth, not to be served. Tired and cranky from not sleeping well at camp? Christianity is easy behind a screen or when we hold people at a distance, but transformation really happens when we rub elbows with people who are hard to love. Serving will mature us spiritually. My girls are no longer just teenagers that I go talk at and sing songs with on Wednesday nights.

They have become family. I pray for them much like I pray for my own daughter. When you serve and give up your time and energy for someone else, you get emotionally and spiritually recharged. It gives more meaning to your life as a servant of Christ. Your volunteers have the opportunity in your environments to literally find purpose and meaning. They find fulfillment in putting the needs of others above themselves. Each one of your volunteers have incredible skills, talents, and abilities.

They did not have to have any technical ability whatsoever. In fact, sometimes, that worked out better because our team could train them from the ground up. But I also tried to create opportunities on our team that allowed people to flourish in the skills and gifts that God gave them.

What if you had a great administrator that might not be able to keep pace with executing a worship service, but could help you schedule and follow-up with volunteers? Jesus commands us to serve others. When your volunteers serve the local church through your team, they are being obedient to what Jesus has called them to.
